Iaijutsu Kata - Aiki Ken Principles
By Ian Stewart

Here is one of the iaijutsu techniques practiced within the York Aiki Jujutsu syllabus. It shows an ukitsuke/kiritsuke to the enemy approaching from the front - done with irimi / ayumi ashi. After that kenshi continues with large tenkan, plus furikaburi / ukenagashi and kesa giri to the enemy coming from behind. Very nice practice for tai sabaki, and also an effective response to double attack from two directions.

The principle of the technique is to underline the Aiki precept that all technique should be treated as "multiple attack"  i.e. adopting zanshin  "awareness" at all times from all sides. Having confronted an attack from the front with in this instance ukitsuke/kiritsuke, irimi is then performed through 180 degrees to confront an attack from behind, finishing with kesa giri.

The technique should be performed as one flowing movement, and in kata form chiburi and noto would be performed while observing zanshin at all times.
