- 1. Knowledge of basic ceremonial and etiquette
rules (reigi):
teito, tachi rei, seiza, za rei, to rei, taito, datto.
2. Demonstration of basic postures (tachiai, hontai, zenkutsu dachi, fudo dachi, Iai hiza, sonkyo, seiza), grips (kirite vs. shinite) and guards: jodan no kamae, chudan no kamae, gedan no kamae, hasso no kamae, waki no kamae, migi no kamae, hidari no kamae. Also explain: seme te and soe te.
3. Footwork (tai sabaki): irimi, tenkan, tsuri ashi (okuri ashi, hiraki ashi, ayumi ashi), shikko ashi, tobi ashi. Distance (ma-ai).
4. Demonstrate basic suburi (kiri undo, uchi geiko) and uchi kaeshi (kiri kaeshi)
5. Demonstration of basic strikes, thrusts and cutting techniques: shomen uchi (shin choku kiri, kiri oroshi), yokomen uchi (kesa giri), do uchi (do kiri, suihei giri), kote uchi, gedan uchi (sukui kiri), harai uchi (kiri age, gyaku kesa giri), tsuki waza (gedan, chudan, jodan), uchi-kiri waza, tsukatte (tsuka tsuki)
6. Renzoku - renraku waza: Demonstrate basic combinations, and also explain following techniques and their application: Harai waza, harai uke, ukenagashi, furikaeshi, kiri otoshi, semme te, suriage, soe te, uke waza, furikaburi, etc.
7. Basics of iai technique (ukisuke, kiritsuke, chiburui, noto): perform at least five traditional kenjutsu, iai jutsu, iaido or kendo kada. (recommended: Seitei Gata, Gendai Goshin Iai kata, tenshin Shoden katori Shinto ryu kata, Muso Eishin and Muso Jikiden Iai kata, Toyama Ryu kata or special set of SBC kata)
8. Demonstration of katate waza and gyakute waza (katate no kamae waza, katate uchi waza, katate tsuki waza, gyakute no kamae waza, gyakute uchi waza, gyakute tsuki waza)
9. Special tactics : te osae waza, atemi waza, tsukatte waza, uchi kiri - all astechniques for small distance, plus: munen muso, mitsu no sen, mi no atari, omote o sasu, ken o fumu.
10. Shiai (kenjutsu Jiyu kumite, kakari waza)
11. Tameshi kiri - all from Happo Giri kata
12. Oral test - history, styles, techniques, weapons, special terminology, associations, sport rules etc., including knowledge on Iai and kendo.
