KIAI NEWS & UPDATES

Dear friends,

I am proud to announce more new members of KIAi (soon to complete the procedure).  Sensei Keith Nicholas from UK, who is my good Internet friend, sent me another message with a fine article for our magazine (check out the "Articles" page). Here is the part of his message:

"(...) Thank you for the sending me the online newsletter and as usual has been a very interesting read..! Keep up the good work!! (...) I am sending you a little article I have written and it'll be good to have your oppinion and comments...maybe you might even consider it for you newletter.  It was inspired  my a student who visited another dojo recently and had  a bad experience. (...) In reference to your invite to join, could you please tell me what is the procedure. Also, my colleague who teaches Kendo, kenjutsu  as expressed a desire to know more about being involved. his Name is Charlie Goulding and is a Seishin Ryu member. (...)"

Well, dear Keith, you and your friend are always welcome. I hope to see more of your contributions in future. And I hope that the rest of KIAI Online Magazine readers will like your article as much as I did.

Founders on the crossroads

Two things happened lately to Walt and me, Co-founders of KIAI. Walt  has changed the name of his association from Kunami Ryu Budokai to Gendai Goshin Budokai. Sensei Walt Bushey is by this giving the honor to his Iai teacher, Seno Kuniaki. Gendai Goshin Budokai of Texas will soon become the Headquarters of Kokusai Gendai Budo Renmei - an international organization for empty handed self defense oriented styles of budo. All of you interested of joining this friendly organization should contact Sensei Walt Bushey :

And what about me? Well, I have already disowned (gave back) three of my black belts. (shodan karate, nidan judo and sandan kobudo). I did it as a protest against ranking policy in Serbian and Yugoslavian associations, as well as against inactivity in my own association, Serbian Budo Council (SBC). Nowadays, I had to do the same: I cut of that "sandan kenjutsu" from my card! Our kenjutsu is incorporated in syllabus of SBCs Jujutsukai division, and being just an instructor (without ranks or titles) is just fine with me. Very similar to Sensei Bish of Red Dragon Ju Jutsu. Unfortunately, our Kenjutsukai division is dismissed, due to inactivity of most of its black belts. Therefore, I felt an obligation to give back the rank assigned to me by those who are not giving me their "backup" anymore. Former Board of Kenjutsu Black Belts (Kenjutsukai) simply disappeared (some have emigrated, some quitted budo, some even died), and now I may look like a self proclaimed sensei!!! In order to avoid all this, I have decided to discard my sandan and to become "just an instructor" again... I only hope you will understand this the right way: not as an act of depressed budoka, but a decision of rational mind.

Yours still,
Ivica Zdravkovic, M.D.
Ju jutsu yondan,
Instructor in kenjutsu, judo, karate and kobudo.
